Policy Area Transport

Policy Area Transport – Enhancing multimodal, emissions-free, innovative and resilient transport

Transport is the pivotal part of the Baltic Sea Region’s supply chains. However, transport faces pressures from geopolitical instability, hybrid threats, climate change and uneven infrastructure development. Digitalisation and the uptake of clean transport technologies advance at different speeds across the region, limiting efficiency and slowing the shift toward emission-free mobility.

The Policy Area Transport stimulates the implementation of innovative and high-tech solutions (both technical and digital) in transport sector. The importance of all modes of transport – land, rail, waterborne and aviation is hereby acknowledged.

PA Transport is currently coordinated by the Ministry of Climate, Estonia and the Transport Innovation Association, Lithuania.

Actions

In the aviation sector, PA Transport’s priorities are connectivity and environmentally sustainable flights; in shipping the efforts go to green shipping and its effects to cargo and passenger transportation, and in land transport the focus is on intelligent transportation systems, digital documents and use of alternative fuels.

Increase development of resilient and sustainable transport in the North-South transport corridors in the Baltic Sea Region and beyond

Action 1 focuses on strengthening resilient, sustainable and multimodal transport along the North–South transport corridors in the Baltic Sea Region and beyond. It supports improved cross-border cooperation, harmonised transport procedures, digitalisation, climate-resilient infrastructure and low-emission transport to ensure efficient, secure and reliable connectivity.

Strengthen measures towards climate-neutral transport in the Baltic Sea Region

Action 2 aims to strengthen measures towards climate-neutral transport in the Baltic Sea Region by supporting cleaner mobility solutions, coordinated policy approaches and investments that reduce transport emissions and accelerate the transition to zero-pollution mobility.

Facilitate innovative transport solutions in the Baltic Sea Region

Action 3 promotes innovative and digital transport solutions in the Baltic Sea Region by supporting the uptake of digital technologies, data sharing, interoperable systems and cross-border cooperation. It aims to improve transport efficiency, transparency, resilience and sustainability while accelerating the digital transformation of the transport sector.
