Description

The 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement marked a point of transformative change in global cooperation for sustainable development. On 22 November 2016 the European Commission published the communication ‘Next Steps for a Sustainable European Future’, which foresees the full integration of SDGs in the European policy framework. The Commission is currently preparing a Reflection Paper entitled ‘Towards a sustainable Europe by 2030’. This paper, on the EU’s long-term implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, will form part of the Future of Europe debate and the focus of the EU’s sectoral policies post-2020. It will also cover the follow-up to the Paris Agreement and ongoing work on resilience and innovation. The outcome of the discussions that are continuing at the European level will also have an impact on the future implementation of the EU’s macro-regional strategies.

With all of these processes going on it is timely to discuss the main challenges for the region in implementing Sustainable Development Goals and how to address these even more strongly within the framework of the EUSBSR. 

The seminar aims to encourage discussion with the European Commission and among EUSBSR stakeholders regarding the region’s shared challenges. It will focus on how adopting the 2030 Agenda perspective through linking the relevant SDGs to the EUSBSR can support finding better solutions and measuring the progress of actions in the Baltic Sea Region post-2020.
