Description

During this seminar, we will elaborate the scale of the marine litter problem in the BSR, learn different types of plastic that form the plastic soup in the seas and oceans, provide solutions for reducing it and highlight the BLASTIC project’s key outcomes. The seminar will also discuss the perspective of conscientious consumers and elaborate on public participation in prevention and mitigation of microplastic pollution.

The Baltic Sea remains one of the most polluted seas in the world, and continuous actions towards improving its environmental status are necessary. This is especially relevant for the ‘Save the Sea’ objective of the EUSBSR. Pollution of the sea and the problem of marine litter require immediate action. Pollution of the sea, especially from pharmaceuticals, eutrophication and marine litter are the most environment-threating trends for the Baltic Sea Region. These types of pollution pose a complex and multidimensional challenge with significant implications for marine and coastal environments and human activities.

At the policy level, many are working with this emerging challenge. The EU is working on a regulation update for marine litter. The HELCOM ministerial meeting approved a declaration of the next steps that must be taken to improve the current state of the Baltic Sea ecosystem. EUSBSR projects actively contribute to these efforts.

The three-year BLASTIC flagship project of the EUSBSR began in 2016. Its main aim is to facilitate the prevention and reduction of marine litter created by municipalities around the Baltic Sea. The project contributes to the HELCOM Action Plan, the EU Marine Framework Directive and the EU Waste Management Directive, and thereby to the ‘Support implementation and compliance with EU regulations and international agreements’ action and objective.
